How to take photos of machines without stopping production

By Piotr Lubelski, Industrial Photographer·June 20, 2024·4 min read

A good session on the hall is one that machine operators hardly notice. At Synergia Lublin, since 2017, we have been proving that professional catalog photos can be taken without turning off the power and interrupting shift work. Below we show how we do it step by step.

Planning the session according to the shift schedule

At Synergia Lublin, we start work by analyzing the production plan. In March 2024, we realized a session for a metal processing plant near Lublin. Instead of going in blindly with a camera, we spent 52 minutes with the production manager analyzing the work charts of 14 CNC machines. We knew exactly when station no. 7 would be undergoing changeover, and when the operator of machine no. 3 would have a breakfast break. This is key because it allows us to set up lighting in places that are not currently crucial for internal plant logistics. We never block transport routes for forklifts.

During this specific realization in 2024, we managed to take 164 raw shots in just 6 hours of work, without forcing a single minute of downtime. We focus on what happens naturally. If the machine is working under cover, we wait for the quality control or material loading moment. Facts on the table: a photo session is meant to support the sale of your products, not generate costs associated with stopping the line. Our team consists of two people who move efficiently between machines, respecting safety zones and designated communication routes.

Good preparation also includes a list of priorities. We always ask the client to point out the 5 most important processes that we must show. In the case of a company from the Lublin Science and Technology Park we worked with in January, we focused on the details of laser welding. Thanks to a precise watch in hand, the photographer appeared at the machine exactly when the process entered the most spectacular phase. The rest of the hall worked at its own pace, and we were just a background to the employees' daily tasks.

Equipment that doesn't need miles of cables

Forget about big tripods that everyone trips over. At Synergia Lublin, we use a mobile flash lighting system with its own battery power. This eliminates the problem of wires trailing on the floor, which is the most common cause of remarks from health and safety inspectors. During a session in July 2023 for an agricultural machinery manufacturer, setting up one light point took us an average of 115 seconds. Thanks to this, we could instantly change perspective and follow the movement on the hall without creating a hazard for personnel.

We use fast prime lenses that allow for work in difficult lighting conditions without the need to illuminate the entire room. This allows for preserving the atmosphere of the production hall while bringing out the machine details. In 2024, the average processing time for one photo from an industrial session in our office in Lublin is 24 minutes. We focus on making the machines look clean, efficient, and modern. We don't remove everything in Photoshop – authenticity builds trust with your B2B contractors.

We often encounter questions about equipment safety in a dusty environment. Our cameras are sealed and adapted to work in difficult conditions, such as foundries or carpentry shops. During a session lasting 7 hours and 15 minutes in one of the Lublin plastic processing plants, we did not need any technical assistance from the client's employees. We are self-sufficient. We bring our own ladders, reflectors, and shields, which shortens our presence on the hall to the absolute minimum.

The employee as a hero, not a model

People are key in industrial photos, but no one likes artificial posing. We know manufacturing and know that a machine operator has their tasks. We don't ask them to smile for the lens for 10 minutes. Instead, we document their real movements. In April 2024, we took photos for a company producing windows. We focused on the employees' hands and the precision of hardware assembly. Thanks to this, the photos are dynamic and show the professionalism of the crew, which is a powerful sales argument in export offers.

A important aspect is the clothing. We always suggest that clients check the condition of workwear a week before the session. It's not about new clothes straight from the box, because that looks unnatural, but about clean sets with the company logo. At Synergia Lublin, we care about such details because we know that one dirty apron in a catalog photo can ruin a brand image built over years. In 2023, we helped 12 companies from the Lublin region refresh their employee photo bank, which translated into a 19% increase in inquiries from contact forms on websites.

We always respect privacy. Before starting work, we ask for a list of people who have agreed to have their image published. If someone doesn't want to be in the photos, we photograph the station so that the employee remains anonymous or focus on the machine itself. This builds a good atmosphere on the hall. Employees feel that their work is important and not just an obstacle for the photographer. This approach allows us to get the best out of the session – the truth about your company.

Authenticity builds trust. We show the professionalism of your crew without unnecessary directing.

How to prepare the hall in 3 simple steps

Preparing for a session does not have to mean a big cleaning of the entire plant. It's enough to focus on the zones that will be photographed. The first step is to remove unnecessary items from around the machines: coffee cups, old newspapers, or random cardboard boxes. At Synergia Lublin, we always repeat: order in the photo suggests order in production processes. In May 2024, a session at a chemical plant lasted 90 minutes less just because the client had previously cleared the lines of unnecessary production waste.

The second step is to check stationary lighting. Replacing burnt-out fluorescent tubes over key machines makes a huge difference. Although we bring our own lamps, the natural hall light provides the base for the photos' atmosphere. The third step is to designate a person to accompany the photographer. It doesn't have to be the director – an employee who knows the hall and has keys to all rooms is enough. In 2023, we finished sessions an average of 34% faster when we had technical support on site that could, for example, open a machine casing for a detail photo.

Remember that photos are an investment for at least 3 years. Catalogs, website, LinkedIn profiles, or trade show exhibitions – these photographs will work everywhere. At Synergia Lublin, we provide ready files in three formats: for large-format printing, for the internet, and in a lightweight version for PDF offers. Since the founding of the company in September 2016, we have served 423 clients, more than half of whom are manufacturing plants from the Lublin region. We know the local specificity and know how to show your business from the best side.
